#tbt: Can You Tell — Ra Ra Riot

With their debut album, The Rhumb Line, Ra Ra Riot gives us this pleasant ditty. It’s bouncy and breezy, and it’s melancholic percussions mix well with the soft, warm strings of their cello and violin. Not relying too much on synths, their music is melodic and organic. “Can You Tell” builds in a manner similar to how your blood pressure builds when you see that somebody who makes you lose sleep, while the drumbeats imitate the rhythm of your heartbeat when you can’t keep your cool around them.

A little more action on the new release front this week, but we’re still in the middle of the summer release blues.

Ra Ra Riot - “Can You Tell”

I’ve been listening to this album non stop since Friday. The Rhumb Line is full of gorgeous string parts as well as melodies that easily get stuck in your head. There’s a fullness to their songs which keeps me listening.

Ra Ra Riot formed in 2006 in Syracuse, NY and recently signed to Barsuk Records. They have played CMJ, SXSW, and have toured with Art Brut, Bow Wow Wow, Editors and Tokyo Police Club.

From track to track,  I hear influences including The Shins, Arcade Fire, Belle and Sebastian and Broken Social Scene. Definitely check out this album!
