PHOX is on the cusp right now—they played SXSW earlier this year, they were just at Lollapalooza (they scored the slot when Azealia Banks had to cancel last minute) and they’ll be at the iTunes Festival next week. They’re literally criss-crossing the world on tour right now. Oh, and did you know that PHOX is managed by Onto Entertainment—the label that currents represents The Lumineers?
The seven-piece band hails from Wisconsin and is a mixture of soul, electronic, indie and folk. Their sound is strong, in sync. But the vocals, led by Monica Martin, are the distinguishing trait of this up-and-coming band.
Her husky tone—it could even be described as smokey—reverberates in your ribcage. Her whispers flood your ear drums and her hums and drawn out notes drip with nostalgia. And the other bandmates do an incredible job of supporting her—in epic tones, with their accompanying harmonies. PHOX sounds like a band with a deep understanding of each other.
It’s why I chose to feature the song Slow Motion, I think it shows the soul of the band and does Martin’s vocals some justice. Do yourself a favor and listen to the song with headphones on, catch the nuisanced sounds, the incredible range of instruments used and the slight shifts in tempo.
